What are Aquatic Invasive Species?

Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) are plants and animals that are not native to Kansas and whose introduction causes economic or environmental harm, or harm to human health.

AIS can lead to:

  • Diminished food supply and available habitat for other species
  • Reduced numbers and variety of desirable fish
  • Reduced fishing and recreational opportunities
  • Lower property values and decreased quality of municipal water sources
  • Foul water lines, clogged intakes, burn-out pumps, damaged power generating facilities and decreased water system efficiency
  • Increase the risk of flooding due to overcrowded biomass and clogging of lake outlets

AIS do not belong in Kansas waters, and it is generally impossible to eradicate them once they are here. If you do not take precautions to ensure that you are not spreading AIS, you could be part of the problem.
